    Winter Warmers - Let it Mull!

    Warm your cockles with us this Christmas…

    When the weather outside is frightful, why not relax with something delightful – let it mull, let it mull, let it mull!   We have rounded up some of our favourite mulled beverage recipes to help you relax and unwind this Christmas – whatever the weather!

     

    But what is ‘to mull’? We mulled this over and realised that it simply meant warming wine or other drinks with added spice and/or sugar. We quickly realised that this opened up a whole new and exciting world of warming winter drinks! All of these can be made in a saucepan on a hob, or alternatively a Slow Cooker makes a wonderful alternative as you can keep the drinks mulling slowly and let guests serve themselves, a perfect way to keep the merriness flowing. Or for a grander presentation, the Kilner drinks dispensers are also suitable for warmed drinks – meaning you can always have drinks on tap for your soiree, and they go from a family friendly 5 Litres up to a Party friendly 8 Litre capacity. (They are also great for cocktails in the garden in the summer – but we’ll get to that next year!)

     

    We asked our stores around the country for their favourite winter warmers and here are just a few of their wonderful ideas.

     

    The Hereford Warmer!

    First up – Hereford, and what else would you expect from the heart of Cider country? Oh, it’s not cider…

    • 1 x carton of apple juice (cloudy, pressed apple juice works beautifully)
    • 1 x shot of vodka (this is optional & only for adults obviously!)
    • 1 x cinnamon stick
    • 1 x star anise
    • A couple of cloves

    Gently warm all of the ingredients together, but don’t let them boil, keep warm and serve.

    Sussex Mulled Wine

    Our Horsham store recommended Lychgate Red, an English Red Wine from their local Bolney Estate in Sussex, for this aromatic blend, reminiscent of an Austrian Gluhwein:

    • 1 x bottle red wine
    • 60g  brown sugar (add extra if required)
    • 1 x cinnamon stick
    • ¼ tsp nutmeg
    • 1 x orange, sliced
    • 60ml sloe gin or brandy if preferred, for a little extra kick (optional)

    Place all of the ingredients into a saucepan and gently warm through, try not to let it boil. Sit back, enjoy!

     

    Somerset Mulled Cider

    Ah, now this is more like it – from another Cider loving part of the country our Taunton store in Somerset came up with this Cider based recipe:

    • 2 litres Scrumpy cider (cloudy looks pretty if you can get it)
    • 6 x cloves
    • 4 x star anise
    • ¼ tsp nutmeg
    • 1 x cinnamon stick
    • ½ tsp vanilla extract
    • Juice of 1 orange, or 2 Satsumas
    • 4–5 tablespoons caster sugar, depending on taste

    Gently warm all of the ingredients together and simmer very gently for a few minutes to allow the flavours to develop. Add more sugar as necessary, depending on your preference.

     

    Spiced Kent Apple Juice

    Another apple based recipe, this time from the “Garden of England” – Kent, more specifically our Canterbury store who suggested this family friendly option:

    • 1 Ltr Apple Juice
    • 1 x cinnamon stick
    • Peel of 1 orange
    • Peel of 1 lemon
    • Small knob of fresh ginger, peeled & grated
    • 2tsp runny honey

    Add all of the ingredients to a saucepan and warm very gently, for around 10 minutes to allow the flavours to develop. Taste and adjust the sweetness as required by adding a little more honey.

     

    Fancy something a little different? 

    Diverting off the ‘Mulled’ track can also be fun and definitely warming! How about a Peppermint Vodka Latte? Or a Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate? Or a warming Kahlua Espresso, which whilst not warm itself, is most definitely warming on a cold and frosty evening!

     

    Peppermint Vodka Latte

    • 1 x shot of peppermint vodka
    • 1 x espresso shot
    • Hot steamed milk
    • Peppermint candy cane to decorate

    Add the espresso (a nespresso machine & a milk frother would make this a super quick warmer!) and top your mug with hot steamed milk & decorate with a candy cane – if you have a Christmas mug then all the better!

     Peppermint Latte


    Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate

    • 2 x Heaped teaspoons of hot chocolate powder
    • 1 x shot Spiced Rum
    • Hot steamed milk
    • Toppings: marshmallows, whipped cream, crumbled flake, edible glitter…

    Add the chocolate powder to your (Christmas) mug, stir in the spiced rum to make a paste, then top up with warmed milk and stir well. Decorate however the mood takes you – go wild, it is Christmas after all!

     Hot Chocolate


    Kaluha Liquor Coffee

    • 1 x shot of Kaluha Liquor
    • 1 x Tbspn Double cream

    A fun alternative to an espresso shot at the end of a meal – why not surprise your guests with a kaluha coffee instead? Simply float the double cream on top of the Kahula and serve in your favourite mini espresso cups, a sprinkle of cocoa or edible glitter would give it a real WOW!

     

    Please be careful: 

    A couple of safety notes when drinking warmed drinks: always check that the glasses are suitable for use with warm drinks, never pour boiling liquids into and cold glass receptacles, whether that be glasses, jugs or drinks dispensers. If using a drinks dispenser for warm drinks, leave the clip undone and the lid slightly ajar to prevent pressure building inside the dispenser. Always supervise children around heat sources and hot drinks dispensers. And finally, please drink responsibly: it can be hard to judge the alcohol content sometimes in mulled drinks, please don’t drink and drive.
