Want to work with us?

At Steamer Trading Cookshop, we're all about our people. When a customer walks through our doors, we want them to feel immediately that they're in a shop where people care about making them feel welcomed and valued - whether they're investing in a whole new look for their kitchen or just passing time to get out of the rain outside. We're passionate about providing good advice and listening to what our customers are telling us. But most of all, we want our customers to leave our shops with a smile on their face, knowing they've experienced good, old fashioned, proper service - perhaps with a little bit of fun, just for good measure.

Lewes Head OfficeIt's the same at our head office and distribution centre, located in lovely Lewes, Sussex. You'll find that we all work (and play) together as a big, happy family - a lot of roles within the Company are filled by members of staff who might have started working for us in one of the shops before moving on to a career at head office. We always remember that whatever we do is all about giving the best possible customer service.

We're a family-run company and we've successfully grown from a single small shop in Alfriston to nearly 30 shops across England in just over 25 years. But don't worry, you're not too late - there's a lot more to come as we want to continue opening more lovely cookshops, full of the very best in kitchenware from all over the world. We're always on the lookout for great people to join our team, so why not see our current opportunities or tell us what you're looking for and you never know what might come of it.

We look forward to hearing from you.

David, Liz and Ben

What's it like to work at Steamer Trading?

Staff at the Witney StoreAs a family-run company, we don't just talk about making Steamer Trading a nice place to work - we make sure it is (we have to work here too, after all!). We could tell you all about it, but instead we're sure you'd rather hear about it from some of our lovely team.

"I joined Steamer Trading when the first little shop opened in Lewes, nearly 20 years ago. Back then, the most difficult part of the job was to find space on the shelves for all the goodies that kept arriving while still leaving room for customers. When we moved up the hill to our current shop, I thought it was wonderful - enough space to dance around! I'm still enjoying chatting to our lovely customers today as much as I did back when I started."
Shirley, Lewes - joined Steamer Trading in 1993

"I'm lucky enough to have one of the best jobs at Steamer Trading - managing the original shop in Alfriston. I started out as a sales assistant in the Battle shop, then got my first chance to prove myself as a manager when a maternity cover position came up. It was great having support as I settled into my new role - the company knew I was passionate about customer service, and they helped me grow my management skills. I see Liz and David, the founders of Steamer Trading, as customers almost every day - it's always a thrill when they tell me how well I'm looking after their old shop!"
Suzanne, Alfriston Manager, joined Steamer Trading in 2003

"When I started with Steamer Trading, I joined as a part-time assistant in the warehouse. Back then it was a really glamorous job, messing around with piles of cardboard boxes and as much bubble wrap to pop as you could want! After a couple of years, I moved on to a bigger company - I thought I'd move on faster. A year later, I was back at Steamer Trading. I'd missed it too much and decided I wanted to make my career here. After a couple of years, I'd worked my way up to running the distribution centre - I'd say it was down to my talent and hard work. Ben says it's because I'm cheeky and asked for the rise enough times!"
Hayley, Lewes Distribution Centre Manager, joined Steamer Trading in 2002

"I've had some interesting jobs in the past - I've been an actress, a theme park tour guide and I've even been sawn in half as a magician's assistant! But even though I've worked with lots of other retail companies before, Steamer Trading is definitely the best. I was a bit worried at first - my shop is over a 100 miles from the next closest, and I thought I'd be forgotten about, up here in Yorkshire. But it's been great - I've been out and about for training, I've had chances to work in other shops and I get people up to see me regularly. I've even had our local Michelin-starred chef in to cook for us in the shop!
Paula, Beverley Manager, joined Steamer Trading in 2011

"I started out working for Steamer Trading after I left university, where I'd studied fashion. My first job was in the Horsham shop, close to where I lived. I really loved the atmosphere in the shop and fell in love with pots and pans! I learnt a huge amount from John and Liz, the store managers - they've worked in cookware for over 15 years. When a role came up at head office in the buying team, I jumped at the chance - and got the job! A lot of companies talk about 'promoting from within', but at Steamer Trading it actually happens."
Nicky, Assistant Buyer, joined Steamer Trading in 2010

What are we looking for?

Staff at the Battle StoreOur people are passionate about what they do - even 'evangelical' sometimes in expressing their love of good cookware. We don't ask that everyone is the best cook in the world, or even that you know your potato masher from your onion goggles - we're very, very good at training our people.

What we do need are real people people. Whether working in our shops or at head office, you'll need to be able to listen, understand and communicate well. We want people who feel that they're giving their best every time and are keen to learn more. It is also a definite advantage if you like good coffee - it's an important part of the culture here!

We're a growing company, so we'd like to find people who want to grow with us. We see part time students working their way through college as future store managers or head office assistants. We look at office assistants and see the next generation of buyers or merchandisers. We find our trainers, merchandisers and area mangers often from encouraging our people in our stores.

We offer full training (you'll probably even be a better cook by the end of it), a very generous staff discount (perfect for equipping your kitchen), a bonus scheme and even a staff social fund (we're not all about work!)

If you'd like to work for a fast growing company, but with real family values - and believe that you can offer what we're looking for - we'd love to hear from you. Visit our current opportunities or contact us if you're perfect for a role that you don't see listed and you'd like to tell us all about yourself.

We look forward to hearing from you!
