The old adage that “a bad workman blames his tools” may be true, but as a professional cook it is a truth universally acknowledged that you can’t cook great food without having access to great tools and equipment. Fortunately for foodies - both professional and home enthusiast - having a Steamer Trading store within reach means you can always find the best tool for the job. And, if they don’t have it in stock, they promise to try to find it for you.

- Peter Bayless, Independent Chef & Food Writer, Winner BBC MasterChef 2006

Peter Bayless finally decided to pursue his childhood passion for food in a professional capacity and entered BBC MasterChef in 2006 to kick-start his dream career. As a result of winning the show, Peter now works as an independent chef in both France and the UK. He has published a book of his experiences and regularly teaches at a number of cookery schools throughout the South East. A regular contributor of articles and recipes to food magazines, Peter’s infectious enthusiasm for fresh ingredients, prepared with care and cooked with love has made him a successful broadcaster on both radio and TV and a highly entertaining live demonstrator at food fairs around the country.

Tucked away off the beaten track, our lovely Heathfield shop will be recognisable to many as the town’s former Victorian railway station. Closed by Lord Beeching in the 1960s, we re-opened the building as a wonderful cookshop.

Still clearly a station building inside, you’ll find bakeware and washing up brushes in the old kitchen, Emma Bridgewater’s china and LSA glass in the old Stationmaster’s sitting room, pots and pans in the waiting room and our counter where was once the ticket office.

We’ve got our own free parking right in front of the shop, a lovely warm working Rayburn for cold days and a small coffee shop with an idyllic garden for when it’s warm. We’re right at the end of the Cuckoo Trail – a 14-mile country track from Hampden Park – so why not visit us by bicycle? Just don’t forget the basket for all those Steamer Trading goodies!

Many customers tell us that our Heathfield store is their favourite – it is certainly unique and you’ll always receive the warmest of welcomes.

I love meeting new customers every day and helping them with their diverse culinary efforts and experiments! Hearing about what dishes are being created and advising them on the best equipment and ways to achieve the result they're after gives me a real sense of achievement.

- Holly Mills, Heathfield Store Manager

The products I never want to do without are:

Epicurean Chopping Board
A multi-use board which absorbs knife cuts and also can be used as a quirky but smart serving platter for cheeses or breads. It can also be used as a trivet, which is especially handy for small kitchens - so it's one tool that will do two jobs well. It goes in the dishwasher and comes in a choice of two colours. A premium price but worth the investment.

KitchenAid Mixer
I never had such good baking results until I bought a KitchenAid. The planetary action is simply the best for creating light and airy cakes, and takes the effort out of baking. The best cheat you can buy! Not to mention the fabulous colours available - well worth the investment.

Kitchen Craft Palette Knife with Wooden Handle
Not an obvious choice, but I have one and it's the best tool I have owned for icing cakes and cupcakes, and loads of other baking jobs. A very reasonable price, and despite the wooden handle it has been through my dishwasher many, many times and is still perfect! Very good value and an essential item for any budding baker.
