In order to keep our operation running smoothly, we need the very best equipment around us. Often this can be large industrial machinery but for day to day essentials such as Chef's Knives or the latest kitchen tools, we turn to Steamer Trading, just down the road in Horsham.

- Lewis Hamblet, Executive Chef at South Lodge

Overlooking the dramatic South Downs and surrounded by 93 acres of stunning parkland, South Lodge Hotel is a magnificent, former family country house offering 89 luxurious rooms and suites, the 2 AA Rosette Camellia restaurant, the recently restored Victorian cellar and stunning restaurant called The Pass, situated in the heart of the kitchen.

Named after the moment of transition from kitchen to dining room, ‘The Pass’ enables diners to see first-hand the creativity and sheer theatre of a busy restaurant team. Since opening in November 2008, this stunning 22 seat restaurant has attracted headlines, food writers and major national and local press interest and was awarded 3 AA Rosettes just four months after opening and its first Michelin star in October 2011.

South Lodge Executive Chef, Lewis Hamblet says, “We are fanatical about using the very best ingredients for every single dish that we produce throughout the hotel, whether that is in The Pass, the Camellia, in the bars and lounges, out on the alfresco terrace or for our corporate clients. As well as working with local food heroes we are blessed here at South Lodge to have our own kitchen garden. The original Victorian walled garden has been restored beyond its former glory and we work closely with our garden team to plan a year round supply of seasonal produce. Ingredients are collected daily - you can’t get more local than that!

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. Selling all manner of ironmongery and housewares, from pans to lawnmowers, cookers to tools, business flourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property.

In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners decided to retire. Having been patched together over the years (it had started life as a covered outdoor yard), we felt the building deserved an anniversary present - and commenced on a year-long renovation.

When we’d finished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café.

Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft. (that’s a lot of pots, plates and potato peelers!). We’ve got great displays of knives (we’ll show you how to sharpen them); lots of wonderful espresso makers (plugged in and ready to try out); and a working cooker to try out pans.

East Street is now the foodie centre of the lovely town of Horsham, so why not wander along our pedestrianised street, pop into Steamer Trading for some retail therapy and enjoy a reviving lunch at one of the many local restaurants afterwards.

After 25 years in the housewares industry I still feel passionate about my job. As a business, we've grown considerably over recent years but each store is allowed to maintain its own personality, allowing me to react to the local needs of our customers. I still feel excited when new ranges are added to our stores. Horsham has a very loyal and knowledgeable customer following, and I still get a buzz from talking to them and showing them all the latest gadgets.

- John Bowles, Horsham Store Manager

These are the products I absolutely can't live
(OK, 'cook') without:

Shun Knives
In my opinion the best knives we stock. Japanese craftsmanship, very comfortable to handle and they look stunning too.

Nespresso - Citiz and Milk
I have personally used Nespresso for over 7 years. I think the quality and consistency achieved EVERY time with this system is amazing, No fuss, very clean, incredibly quick, I love it.

GreenPan - Michel Roux
I think GreenPan has taken non-stick surfaces to the next level; the ceramic coating used is extraordinary and outperforms any other non-stick cookware I have tried. The 3-ply stainless steel range is stunning and with such even heat distribution the whole range is a must-have.
