Meet the Manager

Sue Keogh & Nicola Field

I love seeing new customers' reactions to our shops, and enjoy helping them and returning customers to make the right product choices. But it's the loyalty of people I work with that makes the difference.

For our customers who’ve visited Steamer Trading for many years, Alfriston – our original store – holds a special place in their hearts (and kitchens!). Situated on the famous medieval High Street, our lovely building dates back to the early 15th Century and, as the former Steamer Inn, gave Steamer Trading its name.

It is a wonderful shop to visit – you’ll find oak beams (including the ‘dragon beam’ above the counter – which once supported the jettied frontage of the building), cosy corners to browse in and a warm welcome at any time.

When you’ve finished treating your kitchen, Alfriston is situated in the middle of the Cuckmere Valley in the South Downs National Park – our store is the only cookshop actually on the South Downs Way. So you can take a leisurely stroll (or a brisk walk, if you’re feeling energetic) down to the sea at Cuckmere Haven or up and over the hills surrounding the village.

Restored afterwards with one of Alfriston’s famous teas or something stronger in one of our historic inns (the George, opposite, claims to have been established by 1392) – or with a trip to the famous Drusilla’s zoo park, half a mile down the road – a day out in this lovely village is always a treat.

How to find us

Our address is 2-3 Steamer Cottages, High Street, Alfriston BN26 5TY. If you’re coming by car, Alfriston has two public car parks – the Dene (free for up to 3 hours) or the Willows – which provide ample space. The nearest train station is Berwick (2 miles) and Alfriston is served by regular bus services.

Whilst the store is all on one level, there are one or two steps and some parts of the shop can be a bit narrow (part of its 15th Century charm) - so if you’d like any assistance, please let us know and we’ll make your visit as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Awards for Steamer Trading Alfriston

‘Cookshop of the Year’ 2000 (we’ve won it many years since, but this was the very first year!)
