When Steamer Trading opened its doors in Brighton in 2001, we were trying to do something a little special – and different – in the traditional world of cookshops.
The building we’d found, a little tucked away from the bustling Lanes, was a former church hall which had most recently been used as a bank. To make it into an exciting and welcoming shop was quite a challenge.
To help us with the design, we turned to Sir Terence Conran – who David Phillips, our co-founder had worked with at Habitat in the 1960s, and the Stirling-prize nominated architect Mark Guard. We created mezzanine floors, skylights and a dramatic interior, perfect for showing off our wonderful kitchenware in a stunning modern setting.
Today, as well as offering our widest range or kitchenware, we have displayed some of our favourite design-led brands such as Alessi, Iittala, LSA and Guzzini alongside a fantastic selection of coffee machines, electricals and chef’s knives. Truly a cook’s paradise!
Since the days when the fashionable of London followed the Prince Regent down to Brighton – where they built the most fantastic seafront buildings (many of them now Grade I listed), the city has always attracted an eclectic group of visitors. Whether coming for a day at the seaside, concerts on the beach, browsing in the fantastic shops of the famous Lanes and North Laines or for more hedonistic pleasures, our Brighton store is a must-see on any visit.
How to find us
Right in the centre of Brighton, tucked between the Lanes and the shopping at Churchill Square, you’ll find Ship Street (we’re at no. 35) winding its way up from the seafront. We’re alongside the Fabrica Art Gallery, housed in the Regency church on Duke Street and not too far from the Hotel du Vin – so you can even make a weekend of your visit! Brighton is easily reached by train, and we’re a 5 minute walk (downhill) from the station. By car, there are a large number of car parks within a few minutes walk – try Church Street, The Lanes, Churchill Square or the Station.
For visitors with limited mobility, our Brighton store can present some challenges due to being sited on four floors and with steps to the ground floor entrance (unfortunately no lift, although the staircases are easy to navigate). However, we do have very willing and helpful staff who’ll assist in every way possible. There is disabled parking in front of the shop. If you have any special requirements, please contact us and we’ll do our very best to assist.
