I love seeing new customers' reactions to our shops, and enjoy helping them and returning customers to make the right product choices. But it's the loyalty of people I work with that makes the difference.

When Liz and David Phillips first decided, in 1994, that it was time for a second Steamer Trading shop, they didn’t have to look very far. Just 8 miles from our original Alfriston store, Lewes – the county town of East Sussex – was a perfect choice. At first, Steamer Trading was shoe-horned into a corner of the foodie Riverside Centre.
Small but perfectly formed, we soon outgrew this lovely space and moved up the hill to our current shop at 20-21 High Street. The move was, for us at least, a fortuitous one. The day after we moved out in 2000, the floods hit Lewes and our former Riverside home became a victim of the rising waters (we’re pleased to say it’s now fully restored!).
Our new shop, in a former Victorian milliners, was the first time we had the space to show off all of our wares. We’re particularly proud of our shopfront, which still has the original glass ‘vitrine’ display case – common in Victorian times, but very rarely surviving in modern times.
Lewes, now part of the South Downs National Park, is a wonderful town to visit at any time of the year. Apart from the famous attractions of nearby Glyndebourne opera house and the infamous (!) bonfire night celebrations, Lewes has wonderful independent shops, cafes and restaurants along its historic High Street, and a castle and museum at Anne of Cleves House for fans of English history. For ale enthusiasts, Lewes is also home to the famous Harvey’s Brewery.
How to find us
Steamer Trading is at 20-21 High Street (also known as School Hill to Lewesians), a short walk up from Cliffe High Street and the River Ouse. Lewes is well-served with trains from London and Brighton and the station is a 5-minute walk. If you’re making a trip by car, there is parking on the High Street (1 hour limit) or nearby car parks include East Street, Eastgate or Friars Walk.
For customers with limited mobility, there is free parking available for blue badge holders close to the entrance to the store. Being sited on a hill does mean that we have steps within the store, so please let us know if you’d like any assistance and we’ll be very happy to help in any way possible.
